“Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” - John 6:35
“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’” - John 4:13-14
Christ is the bread of life. The bread Christ is speaking of is symbolism for His body. It’s just as He says at the last supper … “this is my body, broken for you” (1 Corinthians 11:24). We need to eat food for our physical sustenance; however, no matter what or how much we eat, sooner or later we will be hungry again. With the bread Christ provides in His own body, we shall never be hungry again. What does He mean? He is not speaking in a literal sense, but rather in a spiritual sense. Once we take Christ into our bodies in the person of the Holy Spirit our eternal destination is secure. Our hunger for peace, joy, fulfillment and forgiveness has been satisfied.
With the living water Christ provides we shall never be at risk of spiritual dehydration unless we cease drinking from the spring He provides. If we go about our daily lives and shirk our duty to ourselves to eat and drink of all Christ provides in a spiritual sense, then we risk atrophying into a quivering mass of flesh in the corner. We should be compelled to do as Psalm 34:8 says: “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.”
Eternal life is the prize we will have achieved, though we didn’t have to earn it. If we accept Christ as our Savior & Lord and live our lives for the Kingdom our prize is eternity with our Heavenly Father. Salvation is the gift; eternal life is the prize. Live your life like it matters what you think, say and do, because it matters very much. We are to live a life that follows God’s statutes and therefore is pleasing to Him. Remember, the Lord is with you always. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing.
