Religious Groups in Jesus Day

The Pharisees

The Pharisees strictly followed the Mosaic Law, but they also adhered to a vast body of oral traditions and additional regulations known as the Mishnah. While the Mosaic Law contained 613 commandments, Pharisaical practice required obedience to thousands of sub-rules designed to clarify and protect the original laws, such as detailed restrictions on Sabbath work. It would seem to be a means of controlling the population with additional burdensome laws.

The Pharisees believed the Oral Torah was given to Moses alongside the written Torah and passed down through generations, making these extra rules binding.

They prided themselves on meticulous observance of both the written Law and the oral traditions, often focusing on external markers of piety like dietary laws and ritual purity.

Jesus and other critics argued that this legalism shifted focus from the heart of the Law to outward appearances, accusing the Pharisees of adding burdensome traditions that sometimes contradicted God’s original intent. Until next time, walk with the King & be a blessing.

In His Name & for His Glory,
