“For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.” – Colossians 1:19-20
Who is Jesus Christ? He is the only begotten Son of God. Verse 19 reveals to us that God the Father filled Jesus with Himself, thus making Him both man and God when He walked the earth. Matthew 1:23 declares that Mary shall give birth to a son and they shall call Him Immanuel; ‘God with us’. To ‘reconcile’ is to restore a right relationship between two or more parties; to make peace. Because God the Father indwelt Jesus the Christ He was able to restore a right relationship with all of mankind. The tricky part is getting mankind to accept this restoration. Mankind has been duped into believing that God the Father doesn’t even exist and those who do happen to believe in Him are weak; in need of a crutch to lean on in life. Mankind has been led to believe that they can pull themselves up by their own bootstraps and make a way for themselves without the help of anyone. That might make for a good movie, but in reality, we could never make it in this life alone. There is this nagging sin that must be atoned for. Christ’s blood paid that sin debt; however, mankind has turned a blind eye towards the cross. They question its validity and brush it aside as if it were valueless. Foolish mankind. Little do they realize that making peace with God is of paramount importance? Satan has done a good job leading man down a prime rose path that leads nowhere but to hell. Serving God doesn’t seem nearly as exciting as the party life lays out for us. The glitter ball of temptation provides nothing but emptiness and pain. This fact is carefully concealed by the enemy or no one would be enticed.
Eternity is nothing to trifle with. Where we go when we die is of the utmost importance. The way to heaven has been laid out for all. Shun it and you are left having to pay for your sin all by yourself. Embrace it and you receive a clean slate, as if you had never committed one sin. Christ’s death on the cross is a very real event in history. It is the linchpin on which Christianity hangs. Jesus not only paid for all sin, but defeated death in the process so that we might life with Him in heaven for all eternity. Embrace the cross and don’t ever let go.
