“Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” - John 6:35
“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’” - John 4:13-14
In this day and age there is such a push to be healthy and stay hydrated. People are diet and nutrition conscious almost to an extreme. They take care of their bodies yet neglect their souls. The Internationally known group Queen sang in their song “Hammer to Fall” that we build our muscles as our body decays.* The hammer, like the auctioneer’s gavel, comes down in the end. It is indicative of our lives. We will all die at one time or another. Some will live long lives and some lives will be cut off in their prime. We have no control over the longevity of our existence, even though we believe we do. We believe we can extend our lives through exercise and good nutrition and to an extent this is true; however, when your time is up it is up and nothing you can say or do can change that. It is preposterous to think we can dictate when we shall die. The ‘Name it, claim it’ group seemed to think you could check out of this life when you decide to check out based on how much faith you had as if God had nothing to say about it at all. In the midst of all this foolishness Jesus declares that He is all we need.
Christ is the bread of life. Bread: a main staple of life. Nowadays we seek out special grain breads. We are to shun white bread or anything that is white, such as potatoes or rice. Yet the bread Christ is speaking of is symbolism for His body. It is just as He says at the last supper … “this is my body, broken for you” (1 Corinthians 11:24). We need to eat food for our physical sustenance; however, no matter what or how much we eat we will be hungry again sooner or later. With the bread Christ provides in His own body, we shall never be hungry again. What does He mean? He is not speaking in a literal sense, but rather in a spiritual sense. Once we take Christ into our bodies in the person of the Holy Spirit our eternal destination is secure. Our hunger for peace, joy, fulfillment and forgiveness has been satisfied.
With the living water Christ provides we shall never be at risk of spiritual dehydration unless we cease drinking from the spring He provides. If we go about our daily lives and shirk our duty to ourselves to eat and drink of all Christ provides in a spiritual sense, then we risk atrophying into a quivering mass of flesh in the corner. We should be compelled to do as Psalm 34:8 says: “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.”
WALK WITH THE KING TODAY AND BE A BLESSING!!
