“Be not wise in your own eyes; reverently fear and worship the Lord and turn [entirely] away from evil.” (Proverbs 3:7 AMP)
We think we are a pretty smart bunch, us humans. We think there is nothing we encounter on any given day that we cannot figure out and conquer. We overestimate our own wisdom. God cautions us to not think of ourselves as wise. It’s not as if we are incapable of anything positive, it’s just that we have a tendency to allow our own importance to become overblown, thinking of ourselves as greater than we truly are. God is to be revered and worshipped, not our own egos. We are to see God for who He is, wholly omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent. There is none like Him, nor shall there ever be. Jehovah is the one true and everlasting God who is to be reverently feared and worshipped. Fear in this sense means simply to honor and acknowledge Him with respect and admiration for who He is. Scripture isn’t saying we should be afraid of Him, but rather have a healthy regard for God’s abilities, qualities and achievements. He is worthy of our devotion and praise simply for who He is.
I used the Amplified translation of the Bible today because it expanded the text slightly to clarify the meaning of the verse. We are to turn entirely away from evil. We might look at ourselves and our actions and say that we are not evil; however, anything that is apart from God and His word is considered evil in His sight. The standard has been set, we are unqualified to set a new one. To make up our own rules to suit ourselves is prideful and arrogant, assuming we know that which is right and true on our own. We know nothing of goodness apart from God. We know nothing of fairness or clear judgment without the direction and instruction of the Holy Spirit. We are able to function in this world on our own, but are incapable of accomplishing anything of any lasting, eternal value without God’s assistance. Without God we are entitled to nothing but hell fire, nothing more. That is a difficult pill to swallow for some, but it is the reality of things. Without God in our lives molding and making us more like His Son by His Holy Spirit, we are severely lost and without hope. The sad thing is that people are unaware of this or perhaps are aware but refuse to accept it. God loves each of us with an abiding and everlasting love. There is nothing this side of heaven to compare to it. We should seek Him, respect Him and live in obedience to His decrees.
