“I am the vine; you are
the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart
from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5
This verse in John declares that we can do nothing without the
Lord. Now it stands to reason that it
can’t possibly be speaking of our normal daily doings. It must mean something deeper. I believe it means that our spiritual
sustenance comes from the Lord. Without
Him we can do nothing of any eternal value.
Sure, we can do good deeds apart from Him, but those things that have
lasting eternal significance can only come through the Lord’s involvement in
our lives. Without the Lord it would
never be our inclination to do something spiritually important like plant or
water a seed of faith in another soul, for example.
With
the Lord, there’s nothing we cannot do.
God’s plan is to hone us into spiritually vibrant warriors for His
cause. We are to be as the disciples of
Jesus day, learning lessons from the master through scripture and then
replicating what we have read and heard preached or taught. With all the
distractions that exist in this life, it can be a difficult task to be all God
knows we can be. That’s why we must
learn to totally rely upon Him for strength, boldness and a spirit of abandon.
In
the course of our lives we must at some point come to realize that there’s more
to life than just living and dying. Even
the Christian gets tangled up in this dilemma.
Daily appointments and tasks sap our strength and we slowly become uncertain
of which course to take. God knows, but
with the scant time we have left after our busy day, we fail to fellowship with
Him. This is common. I’m not finger pointing, for I suffer from
the same difficulties. We all need to
adjust our focus and spend more time on that which is of eternal significance.
God’s loves us and isn’t chastising us.
He is encouraging us that all things are possible to those who pursue
them for the greater overall good. Until
