Joshua at a glance

JOSHUA

The sixth book in the Bible whose author is Joshua himself. Tradition tells us that it was written in 1375 BC. The time period covered in this book is 1400 BC to 1375 BC. The book of Joshua begins with Israel as a nation and contains the first events that take place after the Exodus from Egypt.

Stories told ...

1) Joshua & his troops surrounded the city of Jericho. God instructed them to blow their trumpets, and shout. These actions caused the wall surrounding the city to fall. (Joshua 6)

2) Rehab the harlot protected the spies of Israel and as a result, she and her family were saved from God’s impending judgment. Rehab ended up marrying into one of the families of Israel. (Joshua 6)

3) God made the sun to stand still in the sky so Joshua and his men could see their surroundings in order to continue fighting. (Joshua 10:12-14)

Important Points found in this book:

1) The first 8 chapters of Joshua cover the 1st battle for Israel as a nation, which was the battle of Jericho. It also covers the battle of Ai, which gave them two pieces of land.

2) In chapter 9 thru 12 in Joshua, the army continues fighting with Joshua as their leader. They conquer and obtain more of the Promised Land, with one great miracle being the stoppage of the sun in the sky.

3) The rest of Joshua (chapters 13 to 24). Tells of Joshua and his men dividing the lands they had conquered among the tribes. In chapters 23 & 24, Joshua give a farewell address and dies at age 110.

Key Verses:

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” - Joshua 1:9

“But Joshua had commanded the army, ‘Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!” - Joshua 6:10

Next time we’ll take a look at the book of Judges ... Until then, walk with the King and be a blessing.

In His Name & for His glory,

Rich Keller
