Psalm 138:1 New Living Translation (NLT)
“I give you thanks, O Lord, with
all my heart; I will sing your praises before the gods.”
David
regularly praises God throughout the Psalms. Here he makes the point that he
praises God rather than any of the gods the surrounding nations have set up for
themselves. They are idols and David knows this. The surrounding nations
foolishly worship lifeless statues.
These so called gods are powerless to do anything to aid those who have
placed their faith and trust in them. Anything that replaces Almighty God or pushes Him to a less significant role in our lives should be considered an
idol.
Take note that during most of David’s
Psalms he takes the time to praise and thank the Lord. This is something that we need to incorporate
into our prayer time. It’s a great way
to start, by extolling the virtues of our wonderful, gracious, merciful
God. It brings joy into our hearts and
peace into our soul. Worshipping the
Lord creates the fuel that drives our relationship with Him. It takes us into deeper places with Him, so
that we can learn the mysteries of heaven.
Nothing on this earth can do for us what God can do. Nothing can provide true
wisdom and guidance the way God can. We can speak to or with God anytime of the
day or night, any day of the year. We never get a busy signal or have to leave
a voice mail with God. Our hearts need to recognize the truth that is found in
scripture, but reading scripture is the only way to do so. We get so easily
entangled in the chores of each day. It happens to us all. Only God can give us
relief. Only God can provide the breath of fresh air that we need. Truly, God
is the only one in our lives who deserves all our praise. Nothing on this earth
compares to Him. Until next time, walk
with the King and be a blessing!
