Then (Jesus)
asked them, “But
who do you say I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Messiah sent from God!” Luke
9:20 New Living Translation
While Jesus walked the earth many thought
he might have been either John the Baptist or Elijah returned from the dead.
Others thought he might be one of the ancient prophets brought back to life. It
was a revelation from God that enabled Peter to see exactly who Jesus truly
was. He was the Christ, the Anointed One of God. Messiah is Hebrew & Christ
is Greek, yet they both mean the same thing, ‘the Anointed One.’
The Gospel according to Matthew takes
things one step further by saying the following after Peter’s Messianic
declaration: Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of
John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not
learn this from any human being.” (Matthew
16:17 NLT)
At one point Jesus asked the disciples if
they would desert him as others had done. Our answer must be like Peter’s when
he said in John 68:69 - “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that
give eternal life. We believe, and we know you are the Holy One of God.” Who do YOU say Jesus
is? Is he just your Savior or is he also
your Lord? Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!
