“You can enter God’s Kingdom
only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is
wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow
and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.” - Matthew 7:13-14 New Living Translation
Pretty much everyone would love to go to
heaven. Those thinking Christianity is nothing more than a bunch of rules and
restrictive regulations may not, but the vast majority of us have their hopes
set on being with the Lord throughout eternity. Those who believe they are good
enough to enter in are mistaken. Those who are relying solely on God’s mercy are
misguided. We can’t earn our way to heaven by doing good deeds because Jesus
told his listeners no one was good except our Father who is in heaven. Millions
profess to be believers, but how many truly are? How many understand what is
required of them to enter into heaven?
Scripture says in many places we need only
confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts God raised
him from the dead and we are ‘saved’.
This is more than likely why so many think all they need to do is believe
in the existence of God and they are home free. What about what Christ did on
the cross? Don’t we have to allow our character and behavior to be changed by
the Holy Spirit that resides within us? Or can we continue to live the way we
like with no thought to living a life that pleases the One who created us from
nothing?
The road to heaven is said to be narrow,
but that simply means it is difficult, not impossible. Jesus holds the key to
achieving heaven. It lies in the forgiveness his blood bought. We are to focus
on living a life that is pleasing to our Heavenly Father. To those who are
determined to do so the road doesn’t seem so narrow or difficult. That’s
because our trust in God far outweighs our fears. Until next time, walk with
the King and be a blessing!
