I was walking the mall the other day and something dawned on me. As I looked around at the people around me I noticed that the vast majority of them were either sitting or walking and either talking on phones or feverishly texting. The thought occurred to me, have we lost the art of interpersonal relations? We sit in front of computers 24/7 chatting with this person or that person. We yak yak yak on our cell phones to whoever. We Skype, email, Facebook, twitter … where is the human touch? Where are the casual, meaningful conversations people used to have with one another? Now it seems as though people have no time to do anything but rush about from one place to the next. Are we slowly killing ourselves for the want of kindness and dialogue that involves something deeper than shallow, meaningless banter? We text in a language of symbols and as a result seem to have lost the art of correct spelling altogether. The dumbing down of society is in full swing and no one seems to notice. It’s no wonder people don’t have time for God; they don’t seem to even have time to live.
As for me, I seek a simpler life; a life where I take the time to ponder nature’s beauty and wonder at the marvels of God’s creation. Life is precious and indeed fleeting. In the grand scheme of things our lives are but a mere tick of the clock; here one day, gone the next. We truly must not waste our days in the manner that we do. We must embrace life; interpersonal contact breeds love, peace, harmony, contentment and as in the end, fulfillment. God is always here to assist in that endeavor. rk
