“Whoever stubbornly refuses to accept criticism
will suddenly be destroyed beyond recovery.” - Proverbs
29:1
New Living
Translation
Being stubborn is a very unattractive
character trait to have in most cases. There are times when you stubbornly
cling to what you know to be right and godly, but that isn’t what we’re
speaking of in this verse. Solomon, the author of the bulk of the Proverbs, is
telling us that those who become self-willed, rather than selfless,
will eventually, yet suddenly, be destroyed and it will come upon them without
warning. Destruction could come in the form of physical or spiritual death. Dying
spiritually is far worse than physical death, because spiritual death leads to
eternal separation from God.
When Solomon
speaks of being “destroyed beyond recovery” I believe he means that over time
those who refuse constructive criticism of any kind shall become
spiritually bankrupt. They shall become emotionally shaken and intellectually
unsure of themselves.
A believer is
to have a teachable spirit toward the things of God. This takes time and
patience. It calls for being far better at listening than talking. Being closed
minded leads to being totally unyielding, which will lead you down a very rocky
road. It’s your choice to make. Choose wisely. Until next time, walk with the
King and be a blessing!
