ISAIAH
The Prophecies
As I had mentioned in the last two postings on Isaiah, I am going to show the 22 prophecies given by the prophet Isaiah and follow up with it’s NT fulfillment. I will list them in chronological order as they appear in the bible text.
The Prophecies of the Coming Messiah
Isaiah 7:14 - “All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).”
It’s fulfillment: Luke 1:30-31 - “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.”
Isaiah 9:1-2 - “Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory.”
It’s fulfillment: Matthew 4:13-14 - “He (Jesus) went first to Nazareth, then left there and moved to Capernaum, beside the Sea of Galilee, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. This fulfilled what God said through the prophet Isaiah....”.
Isaiah 9:7 ... Isaiah 11:1, 10 - “His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!”
It’s fulfillment: Luke 1:32-33 - “He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”
Isaiah 40:3 - “Listen! It’s the voice of someone shouting, ‘Clear the way through the wilderness for the Lord! Make a straight highway through the wasteland for our God!’”
It’s fulfillment: John 1:23 - John replied in the words of the prophet Isaiah: “I am a voice shouting in the wilderness,
‘Clear the way for the Lord’s coming!’”
Isaiah 50:6 - “I offered my back to those who beat me and my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard. I did not hide my face from mockery and spitting.”
It’s fulfillment: “Then they began to spit in Jesus’ face and beat him with their fists. And some slapped him,....”
This will need to be done in 4 installments ... it’s important to take the time to study the prophecies regarding the coming of the Messiah. It helps you to understand that the Bible isn’t just some fairy tale or randomly written book. To be told something prior to it occurring involves faith and trust, just like believing in God’s existence in the first place. Being asked to believe in anything that happened over 2000 years ago involves faith and trust as well. You must believe in things that could be either true or false. What causes us to believe supposed historic events without actually being there when it happened? Faith and trust ... it’s all we have to go on ... and the real life experiences that are tied to that faith and trust. It's no coincidence that the events that took place in the gospels line up exactly with the prophetic utterances of the prophet Isaiah. God set it up that way. Is it really so impossible to believe? Dial into the Spirit of God and see where it leads you. Lean on the Lord daily ... continuously ... without hesitation. He does not fail and will never let you down. Stare down your circumstances and smile. It’s just another opportunity to trust God a little more. Installment #2 of the prophecies from Isaiah is coming next. Enjoy your Lord’s day! Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing.
