JEREMIAH
As with Isaiah, there are two sections in Jeremiah that speak to two different topics, though they are both related to judgment. Verses 1:1 thru 45:5 deals with God’s judgment of Judah. Verses 46:1 thru 52:34 reveals God’s judgment on the surrounding nations.
The Blueprint
The Judgment of Judah
1) The call of Jeremiah to be a prophet unto the Lord.
2) Jeremiah condemns Judah (the Southern Kingdom) for its sins.
3) Jeremiah prophesies destruction due to their lack of repentance.
4) The prophet pointedly makes accusations against Judah’s leaders.
5) The promise of restoration is told to the nation.
6) The arrival of God’s promised judgment.
Jeremiah didn’t hold back as he confronted kings, false prophets, those at the temples, and those at the city gates. The peoples lack of response discouraged the prophet as he wondered if he his prophesies were having any positive effect on the sinful situation in Judah. He had been given a difficult task by God to bring such gloomy messages and it was beginning to make him a little bitter. It’s no different today. We are to share the consequences of sin to those around us, as well as the hope that God offers.
The Judgment of surrounding nations
1) The prophecies regarding the foreign nations.
2) The fall of Jerusalem.
Jeremiah lived long enough to see many of his prophecies fulfilled ... most notably the fall of Jerusalem to the hands of the Babylonians. Their fulfillment came as the result of their sin. Whoever refuses to confess their sin brings judgment upon themselves.
Tomorrow we will look at the five Mega-Themes in Jeremiah. Until then, walk with the King and be a blessing.
