James 1:22 New Living Translation
“But don’t just listen to
God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling
yourselves.”
It is very
important to listen to the Word of the Lord, but it is far more important to
put it into action. You can judge how obedient and faithful a Christian you are
by how much you think, speak and act like our Savior. That only comes from learning scripture and
putting it into practice. It’s no secret
that we are to know the Word of God.
This is spoken of throughout the Bible, especially in the Psalms. To think we can make a go of this life
without the wisdom that is found in God’s Word is foolhardy at best. Why would you even want to attempt to do that
when God already knows everything that needs to be known? How many mistakes would we avoid if we simply
live out what we read in scripture?
This letter from
the Apostle James was written to the Jewish believers who, due to persecution,
had been scattered throughout the Mediterranean world. One of the reasons for the letter was that it
seemed they were tempted to apply head knowledge over true faith in their daily
lives. James reminded them that theirs
was a living faith, not just statements written on pages. The Word of God is referred to as “alive and
active” (Hebrews 4:12).
This particular
translation of the Bible uses the word “must” regarding whether we are to obey
God’s Word or not. It’s true. If we desire to grow in the grace and
knowledge of the Lord, there is no other way then to not just read, but digest
scripture on a daily basis or at the very least as often as humanly
possible. God’s Word holds the key to
peace, mercy, grace, love, contentment, forgiveness and so much more. These things are out of reach outside of the
scriptures. Submission is something we
must accept and do when it comes to the Lord.
He wishes to lead and guide us, but we have to want to be led. It’s our choice. Submit and grow. Until next time, walk with the King and be a
blessing!
