Psalm 86:5 New Living Translation
“O Lord, you are so good, so ready
to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.”
What is the true nature of God? Is it one of wrath as may be supposed
from the text of the Old Testament? While God does punish sin, his nature is
one of love, mercy and forgiveness. Psalm 86 is a prayer of King David. He
sought the face of God to “Bend down” to hear his prayer. David asked for protection and mercy for he
was apparently in deep trouble at the time of this writing.
Another glimpse into the
true nature of God is found in Exodus 34:6. Here Moses made a second set of
stone tablets with the Ten Commandments on them.* The Lord God came to him and
spoke to Moses saying: “Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am
slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.” The love of God is a predominant theme in scripture
and is realized most emphatically with the substitutionary death of Christ for
our sins. As much as the Lord loves all of his creation, he waits for sinners
to turn to him with prayers of repentance.
Such prayers usher in a new spirit and a new life.
God’s steadfast love is
toward those who choose to be in covenant with him. When we are in dire straights all we need to do is call out his name and
he will be with us. In fact, due to the infiltration of God’s Holy Spirit, he
is in us. No matter what circumstances we happen to find ourselves in,
we are able to call for assistance from our God. There is no reason to allow depression or an
anxious spirit drive you down. The Lord will hear and respond when he knows the
time is right. Until next time, walk
with the King and be a blessing!
