Ephesians 6:14-17 New
International Version
“Stand
firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the
breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the
readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up
the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of
the evil one. Take the helmet
of salvation and the sword
of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
“The Word is called the
sword of the Spirit because it comes from the Holy Spirit and works in the soul of man through the
operation of the Holy Spirit.”[1]
The
last piece of a believer’s armor is their sword. It is the Word of God … the
Sword of the Spirit. I affectionately refer to my small New Testament as my
dagger. You cannot effectively utilize it without reading it. Just like you
cannot find your way from point A to point B without some sort of Navigational
device, you cannot know how to ward off the enemy without the Word of God
embedded in your heart and mind.
While
it should be obvious that the Armor of God listed here in Paul’s letter to the
Ephesians is figurative in nature and not literal armor that we must put on, it
paints a perfect picture in the believer’s mind of what each piece can and will
do for you if you take full advantage of them. Note that only one piece of your
armor is for offense. The rest is to protect you. Use the armor effectively so
that you might repel the enemies’ attacks. Unwavering faith and trust in God
will serve you well as you wind your way thru the maze of life. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!
