“How can a young person stay
on the path of purity? By living
according to your word. I seek you with
all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word
in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Praise be to you, Lord; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount all the laws that come
from your mouth. I rejoice in following
your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.
I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect
your word.” Psalm 119:9-16
These 8
verses in the longest Psalm in the Bible are chock full of action words. In other words, things we need to do. If we want to
live for God we must seek Him. We need to hide God’s Word in our
hearts for the time when we need to call upon them for encouragement or
sustaining power. We need to make the request
for the Lord to teach us His laws and decrees thru the activity of the Holy
Sprit in our lives. We are to follow
God’s standards and rejoice just as one would rejoice in great riches. We need to meditate of the precepts
of the Lord at all times so they are fresh in our minds when we are confronted
with difficulties. And finally, we are
to delight
in God’s Word and not neglect it.
If you’ve
been following my devotionals for some time you may have noticed that I write quite
a bit about how we, as believers, must immerse ourselves in God’s Word to truly
know the nature and character of God. I
say it so often because it is a vital piece to our spiritual maturation
process. How can you know about God
without reading His Word? You
can’t. You can learn a certain amount by
listening to sermons, teaching tapes, song lyrics and so on, but you can’t
truly know the finer nuances of His personality without doing some
digging. It doesn’t come thru osmosis,
as with plants and trees, we have to do some earnest investigation.
The Lord
wants us to know Him even as we are known by Him. Living a life void of an in depth association
with God’s Word will leave a person dry as a bone. The Bible is how we chart our course thru
this life. Do you absolutely have
to read it? Nope, you sure don’t. But if
you don’t bother to even crack the cover you will never grow spiritually. You will stagnate and be of no value to the
kingdom. Oh, He will still love you, nothing
could ever change that, but we are called to minister on His behalf to a lost
and dying world, not slip into heaven by the skin of our teeth. We need to make a difference in the
microscopic portion of the world we live in.
Follow David’s advice and live a more production life for the God of all
creation. Until next time, walk with the
King and be a blessing!
Purity - Freedom from spiritual or moral defilement;
innocence or chastity.
