“My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.” - 1 John 2:1
Although we have become a new creature in Christ when we receive salvation, we will sin again for perfection is unattainable this side of heaven. It’s comforting to know that even when we do sin we have a parakletos, or ‘helper’ who will defend us. This Greek word is used in the gospel of John to mean the Holy Spirit; however, in this case it is speaking of our Lord. To put it into modern terminology, Jesus is our lawyer; the One who will defend us before the Father regarding our sinful indiscretion. Once we are forgiven of the sin, we must then turn from it and do it no more. Christ died on a cross to pay for all our sins. I think the very least we can do is live our lives striving to be like Him in all that we think, say and do. To not do so is to trample on the grace God has so freely given us. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!
