RESIST & STAND FIRM

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” - 1 Peter 5:8-9

          How can we resist the devil and all his temptations? By drawing near to God (James 4:7-8); for it is only by being close to God that we can attain victory. Our faith has brought us to the point at which we now stand. The afflictions that we endure in this life are temporal; they shall soon pass. As we lean heavily on our Lord, we can withstand anything that comes against us. Our faith will be tested. Our trials have only just begun. We must be diligent in our walk with God so as not to be caught up in those things that can bring us down. God has already won the war through Christ’s death, yet battles still rage on for the souls of men. Staying as close to God as possible at all times is paramount to our success in this life. We cannot do this alone. If we do we will be tripped up by the enemy and fall on our face. Take your walk with God seriously and with dogged determination strive to live for Him each and every day. THE GIFT OF GRACE

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” - Ephesians 2:8-9          
          Grace is the undeserved favor of God. It has been given to us as a gift. As with all gifts, we must receive it. If I have a gift that is intended for someone and offer it to them, yet they never take it from me, it does the intended recipient no good. One must accept this marvelous gift as their own.

          Paul makes it clear in this letter that our faith in God’s gift of grace has saved us from our sin. Our good works have nothing to do with our salvation. We don’t get to heaven based on anything we have done, are doing or ever will do. It is our new relationship with God that should compel us to do good works as a result of our faith. So you see we do good works because we are saved, not to become saved.

          No other religion in existence offers this free gift, yet it is shunned by millions. The door to salvation is open wide. All a person has to do is step through it. Embrace the gift. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!

IN THE MIDST OF THE STORM

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” - Romans 12:12

          Joy, patience & faithfulness; three character traits that are important for anyone to have, yet three that seem to frequently elude us. I would submit to you that we should take these in reverse order to the way they appear here. If we are faithful in prayer we will tap into heavenly resources which will aid us in being patient throughout our affliction, whatever it may be. The hope that is found in knowing Christ will bring joy to our hearts. True lasting contentment and fulfillment can be found in no one other than God. He alone is the One who provides payment for our sin debt. He is the One who enables us to withstand any and all trials that come against us. If we allow Him to have His way in our lives through His Holy Spirit, we can know peace in the midst of every storm. It comes from a personal, intimate relationship with our God. Draw close to Him by reading His word and spending time with brothers and sisters in the faith. Surrender your life to the Lord. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!

GOD IS ETERNAL

“All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.”

– 1 Peter 1:24-25

          The Apostle Peter quotes Isaiah (40:6-8) in speaking to the “exiles” scattered throughout Asia Minor. Isaiah was speaking of how earthly kingdoms, such as the Babylonians who had been Israel’s captors, wither away like grass. In contrast, he states that God’s word shall “endure forever”. Nothing can alter the plans God has for any of us, except us of course. If our own will clashes with God’s and forces itself into being, then God’s plans for us can be disabled. Aside from that, God’s word and His plan for the dedicated, determined, faithful believer are fixed and will take place at the precise moment God declares it shall be. All things in this life are temporal; even hardships and pain. At some point it shall all come to an end for God is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. There is nothing that is impossible for Him and nothing that is unknown to Him. How could our trust possibly be in anyone else? Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!

THE BIBLE - GOD'S WORD TO US

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Believing in God is a matter of faith and trust. Believing the Bible is God's perfect word requires the same. Yes, there are different translations and yes, at times simplifying the text can cloud its intended meaning; however, this should not take away from the fact that scripture declares itself to be spoken by God. The meaning is still intact and clear. Those who seek a way to avoid submitting their will to an unseen deity will make up any reason to do so, but for those who have placed their complete trust in God and His word, we see it as our life line, our reason for hope. Where does an unbeliever's hope come from; their own knowledge and abilities? I submit to you that there is nothing so difficult or offensive in scripture that would keep people away from God other than their own rebellious nature that refuses to surrender its will. For me, that is the one main reason why people shun religion and Christianity in particular. Those outside the family of God don't realize that they owe a debt they could never in a million years pay. It is the sin debt that all of mankind owes. Surrendering to Christ and accepting His forgiveness is the only way to remove our sin debt from us. The next step leads to a personal relationship with our Heavenly Father. All this is tied into accepting God's word for what it says it is. Without the Bible as our guide we are like rudderless ships with no hope of getting where we need to go. LEARNING OUR LESSONS

“… always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” - Ephesians 5:20

 

          Paul’s letter to the Ephesians is said to be a letter that was circulated throughout Asia Minor due to the fact that it isn’t addressed to any specific church and doesn’t have his usual personal greeting at the end. The Ephesian church had dealt with the issue of black magic, cult religions and persecution from the local Jews. Paul is pointing out that there is no other religion or school of thought that offers them what Christ offers for through Christ they already had every spiritual blessing.

          Looking at this verse makes me think of how we handle difficulties. If we are to thank God for everything, then we are to thank Him for our difficulties as well as our blessings. That goes against the grain with many of us I would imagine; however, it is in the difficulties that we learn the greatest lessons. If we ascribe to the thought that everything happens for a reason in God’s economy, then instead of wearing a ‘woe is me’ countenance, we should seek the lesson God wishes to teach us. THE WISDOM OF GOD

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” – Proverbs 9:10

      When an individual receives forgiveness from God they enter into a special relationship. A genuine desire to worship and serve Him begins to develop. You find that you fear Him, yet it’s not fear as in being afraid. It’s an awe and reverence that begins to form within you as your understanding of who you are in relationship with starts to crystallize in your mind. Knowing who God truly is and who you are IN Him is vitally important to the spiritual growth and maturity of the believer. Only then will we shed the old skin of doubt and receive the wisdom and knowledge that is available to us by His Holy Spirit. As we feed our spirit man from the manna that is His word, we must allow it to permeate our very souls as we strive for understanding. Only God can help us attain this deep spiritual understanding. Striving to be more like Christ in our daily life will only come as we begin to think as He would and this comes to us through the wisdom and understanding that God dispenses to the seeking heart. ADOPTED HEIRS

“If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” - Galatians 3:29

     Romans 11:17 tells every believer that they have been grafted into the family of God due to the Jews' rejection of Christ. Their rejection opened the door for us all to partake in the forgiveness that God so freely offers to all who would believe. However it’s not just believing that is required for scripture tells us that even the demons believe and shudder at the mere mention of the name of Jesus (James 2:19). We must first receive the gift of redemption, then enter into a personal and very intimate relationship with our God, allowing His Spirit to change us from the inside out.

     In 2 Samuel 9 it speaks of the lame son of David’s dear friend Jonathan, son of Saul. Since both Jonathan & his father were killed in battle, Mephibosheth was without a family. David took him in and gave him all the privileges he would give his own son. Therefore Mephibosheth was adopted by David. We too are adopted into God’s family and have become rightful heirs to all He has. We are never alone, but rather are a part of something that is bigger than ourselves; we are children of Almighty God. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!

GODLY COUNSEL

“Without good advice everything goes wrong - it takes careful planning for things to go right.” – Proverbs 15:22 (CEV)

      Many times we need advice regarding a decision we must make. God can provide that advice in the form of wisdom and that wisdom might just come from someone whose opinion you trust the most. I have a mentor whom I have known for nearly 10 years. When I am ever in doubt as to which direction I should go I either email or call him. His wise counsel has kept me from saying and doing the wrong thing many times. It has also kept me on the right path when I was in danger of veering off onto a rabbit trail.

       It takes time to make a proper decision regarding important events; but what about the times when we simply must make a decision “on the fly”. We must then rely on past experiences and previous wise counsel to make those quick decisions. The closer we stay in our Lord, the better we will hear His Holy Spirit give us the answers we need to succeed. We cannot hope to make right decisions without some sort of good and godly advice. SUBMITTING TO GOD’S WILL

“I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart.” - Psalm 40:8

       One of the keys to developing a personal relationship with God is to side step our own will in favor of the will of God. If God created us then there must be nothing about us that He doesn’t know; therefore, He must know what’s best for us. So it stands to reason that His will for us would be more beneficial than anything we could come up with on our own. This doesn’t mean we aren’t allowed to make a move without the Lord’s approval. What it means is that when we are making life decisions, such as, where to live, where to attend church, who to date or marry, where to work, where to go to college and so on, we need to incorporate God in our decision making process. He alone knows the beginning from the end. He sees what we cannot see and knows what we cannot know. We must tuck His word in our heart and live by it daily with the Holy Spirit’s help. GOD’S HAND OF MERCY

“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him…” - Psalm 37:5

 

       “All thy cares and business, and necessities, commend (entrust them) to God by fervent prayer.” These are the words from John Wesley’s Explanatory Notes from the 1700’s regarding this verse of scripture. What was true at the time David wrote Psalm 37 was true when Wesley dissected it and is still true over 250 years later. If your faith leads you to trust God with all your cares, business and necessities, He will not fail you. There is no record of failure on God’s part throughout history, therefore, He can and should be trusted without question or hesitation. God knows what He’s doing.

       Throughout the Psalms David chronicles his need for God and his praise for Him as well. He takes us on a roller coaster of emotions as he both cries out for mercy and lifts up the name of the Lord. One thing stands out as being crystal clear; David trusted God. We are to do likewise. Incorporating God into our lives isn’t only for when we are in trouble or dire need; it’s for every day. As we commit all our ways to the Lord and place our trust firmly in Him we shall see His hand of mercy move on our behalf. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!

BE STRONG & WAIT

“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” - Psalm 27:14

          Waiting is something that we, as mortals, find extremely hard to do on any level. Waiting for the Lord to act on our behalf can be even more excruciating due to the fact that He is unseen. We have this penchant for wanting to work things out on our own. We must understand and accept that God has our best interests at heart and knows the best time and best way to assist us. It’s a matter of faith and trust. If we don’t allow God to change us from the inside out then we will always wonder if He heard our cries for help. If we don’t take our relationship with Him seriously, then we will end up relying on our own comparatively feeble intellect and limited resources. God and God alone can save us. God and God alone is worth waiting for.

          David was a man who suffered many trials in his life. He knew all about trusting in God to move on his behalf. Let us take a tip from David and be strong in the face of trials and delays and patiently wait for the Lord. He has never failed any of us yet. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!

TRUSTING GOD

“My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only he will release my feet from the snare.” - Psalm 25:15

 

          David had known his fair share of distress, at times because of his own lack of good judgment. At times like that he fell into the arms of his God. David was keenly aware that only God could save him from calamity and from himself.

          In this day and age the same holds true. We find ourselves in all sorts of trouble, at times by our own hand. In times such as these our God is there; ready, willing and able to rescue us from the ‘snare’. We must come to the place in our walk with God that we trust Him without an ounce of hesitation. God has promised to provide for and sustain us in this life until He ushers us into the next. We must rely on Him to lead us and then follow that lead. Giving the Lord a head nod only to go off on our own cannot be an option. We must immerse ourselves in Him through His word. God cares deeply for us and will never fail us. OUR ROCK & REDEEMER

“May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” - Psalm 19:14

     It should be the desire of each believer to honor God with his thoughts, words and deeds. We are to acknowledge the goodness and greatness of our Lord through the lives we live. Living for God isn’t something that we do glibly or on occasion. We are to strive to know Him through His word and then live out the precepts that are written therein. It’s the only way to have any sense of who God is or what is required of us. It’s this way that we know His promises are etched in stone and stand forever.

      David refers to God as his rock and redeemer. The Lord is our immovable bedrock, the never changing foundation on which we may build our lives. Why would we want to do that? Because He and He alone is our redeemer. Scripture declares that “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The only way to be forgiven of our sins is to receive that gift of grace that God freely offers. Redemption is found in no other. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!

AVOIDING GOD’S DISPLEASURE

“But the thing David had done displeased the LORD.” - 2 Samuel 11:27c

      King David was called a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22), yet he was still prone to sin as he did when he took another man’s wife for himself and had her husband killed. The thing he had done displeased God. How would you like to have that said of you? I know I wouldn’t, yet I am sure there have been times in my life when it was said in the heavens that God wasn’t pleased with me. There are consequences for every decision we make in this life. In David’s case the son born of Bathsheba as a result of their relations died. David was distraught and wished to take the place of his infant son, but God ruled justly and took the life of the child. What does our sin cause to take place in our lives? Have you ever considered this? There is a distinct reason why we are to follow the word of God in thought, word and deed. Our lives are the better for it, for while we think we know how to live rightly we absolutely do not. When left to our own devices we choose poorly the majority of the time. TOTAL TRANSFORMATION

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” - Romans 12:2

          Most times when we see this verse of scripture it is to pound into us not to be like the world. Today I would like to focus on knowing God’s will. The only way to know His good, pleasing and perfect will is to know Him. Now far too many people give lip service regarding God by saying we believe in Him and allowing that belief to change your life are two distinctly different things. Churches are filled to the brim with folks who are Christians in name alone yet don't live like one outside the four walls of the church. Being transformed by the renewing of your mind requires a diligent effort on our part to dig into God’s truth and really know Him in the most intimate sense. There is no other way to know His will for us. It’s not a casual thing that just appears before us in flashing neon, but rather something that is discerned with the help of the Holy Spirit. Allow yourself to be transformed by the Spirit of God so you might know His perfect will for your life. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!

REVERENCE LEADS TO WISDOM

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools*despise wisdom and instruction.” – Proverbs 1:7

     The word fear in this verse doesn’t mean we are to be afraid of God. He does not rule and reign based on His followers being terrified of wronging Him. No, fear in this case means reverence or awe. We are to revere God with a sense of awe and wonder. We are to bow down to His infinite wisdom and His unconditional love and mercy. Once we recognize God for who He truly is we will begin to glean knowledge from Him through His word, the Bible. Now this all takes faith and trust which we would have had to have had to believe in God to begin with. Believing in His word and applying it to our lives will result in spiritual maturity and growth. To pick and choose what we believe or don’t believe is nothing more than trying to seize control of a life that we cannot live without God’s help. It's in surrendering our will to God that we start to see the reality of things. Scripture becomes clearer and our faith becomes galvanized. Don’t be the fool who despises instruction. Yield to the Spirit of God and grow in the knowledge of the Lord. SALVATION IS FOUND IN NO OTHER

“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.” - Psalm 62:1

 

      This is a Psalm of David. Knowing the harrowing dangers that he endured during his reign as King of Israel, this first verse reveals where David’s real strength lies; it lies in his God. David is confident that his life shall be saved and his soul will find rest in God and in God alone. Lasting peace and rest can be found in no other.

       This provides a valuable lesson to us as believers today. During our walk with Christ we must come to the realization that true contentment and rest can be found only in a right relationship with God. It’s a growth process that sees us mature spiritually. The longer we walk with Him the more our faith and trust will grow. As an outcropping of that faith and trust we begin to accept the provision and sustenance that God provides. We recognize it for what it is. We can rest with confidence that our God will save us from that which attempts to ensnare us. As we place our full reliance on Him, we will find rest for our salvation come from God and God alone. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!

INSIGHT THRU HUMILITY

“The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.” – Proverbs 20:5

       Scripture tells us that God knows the hearts of men*; however, man can only know such things with discernment given by the Holy Spirit. Discernment is attainable, but requires diligence in seeking it. Only the person who is close to God and humble of heart can know the motivations that some people may have. Our problem is that we judge too quickly based on externals. We ought not to do that. It’s critical that we allow God to be the judge over His own creation rather than for the creature passing judgment on his fellow man.

       Insight is not come by easily. It takes time and a pure heart to attain both insight and humility. Humility is a modest or low view of one’s importance. It’s a characteristic that’s attractive for the Christian to have, yet false humility must be avoided. It’s in the seeking of God and His wisdom that we begin to take on the godly characteristics we need to live the modest life that is pleasing to our Lord. HOLD FAST TO THE LORD

“It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.” - Deuteronomy 13:4

     Deuteronomy (which means ‘The Second Law’) is comprised of three speeches Moses gives to the people of Israel. Chapter 13 is part of his second speech where he talks to them about turning away from God. At this time the Israelites are camped across the Jordan River preparing to enter into the Promised Land of Canaan.

     The same holds true for believers today. Temptations abound and the thought of straying from the Lord, while many times not intentional, is a real threat. We get caught up in the momentary exhilaration of the ‘thing’ and if not careful can get swept off our original course. We must surrender our will to God and obey Him alone. We must hold fast to the Lord as one would strap themselves to the mast of a schooner during a raging storm. If we do so, then though tossed about by the winds and waves of temptation, we will still be standing when the storm is over. There is no other way to avoid falling away from God. OUR ONLY SALVATION

“‘I, even I, am the Lord, and apart from me there is no savior. I have revealed and saved and proclaimed— I, and not some foreign god among you. You are my witnesses,’ declares the Lord, ‘that I am God.’” - Isaiah 43:11-12

      During the Babylonian exile, the Jews were exposed to foreign gods. The temptation to abandon their faith in Jehovah God and serve those gods must have been constant. Through the prophet Isaiah they are told that there is no other deity coming who shall save them. It is Jehovah, the great I AM that saves and no one else. He declares that He is God. He reminds them that they are witnesses to His power and might. God is the only salvation available to them.

       For us today, the same holds true. Christ came to save us from our sins and from our own destructive tendencies. To NOT serve Him is to decide that we have a better way. There is nothing we can do to save ourselves. Christ is the answer. God has seen to that. Our free will allows us to choose; however, the choices we make come with consequences. EARNESTLY SEEKING GOD

“You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.” - Psalm 63:1

          King David wrote this Psalm of worship to Jehovah possibly when he was on the run from his arrogant and vain son Absalom, who tried to take the throne from him by force. Although his life was threatened he still offered praise to his God, knowing that only God could protect and save him. His thirsting after the Lord is something we should apply to our own lives.

          When we are in need of liquids, perhaps to stave off dehydration, we crave it and seek it earnestly. In like manner we should earnestly seek the fellowship of the Lord. He stands stationary, awaiting our approach yet we busy ourselves with life’s trivialities. It seems that we only pay Him any mind at all when we feel we need Him, not realizing that we need Him always. Without the wisdom and guidance of His Holy Spirit, we would be undone; unable to survive in a dark and sinful world. Surrender to the will of God for your life. WHO MOVED?

“Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near.” - Isaiah 55:6

         The prophet Isaiah is speaking here in chapter 55 from Babylon to the exiles captured by the Babylonians after the fall of Jerusalem. Isaiah is prophesying of the deliverance that is coming by God’s own hand. He shall cause Babylon to fall and shall bring the Jews back home. Here we see the prophet urging them to seek the face of their God while He still allows Himself to be found.

         God doesn’t move away from us, we move away from Him, as the Israelites had done. If you find that your walk with God either lacking or non-existent, then seek Him now and don’t delay. Each day you tarry is a lost opportunity to live under His umbrella of grace. Knowing God isn’t simply giving the ‘big guy upstairs’ a head nod of acknowledgement; it’s surrendering your life and your will to His and allowing Him to direct your paths. The Jews are an excellent example of the ebb and flow that can exist in one’s faith. As a nation they rose and fell as a direct result of the level of commitment they had to God. Don’t be like the Jews of the Old Testament. Develop a consistency in your walk with God and never have a doubt as to your eternal destination. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!

THE FUTURE

“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.” - Proverbs 27:1

      While we think we have it all together and can mold our futures the way we want them, in reality, we have absolutely no control over the future at all. God holds the key to our future and it will play out as He has ordained. James 4:14b declares that we are “a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” We want to believe that we can dictate the path we’ll take; however, the future is not ours to know. When we truly live for God we embrace each day as if it were our last and while we may plan vacations or long weekends for the not too distant future out of necessity, we are not to be consumed with the thought of future events. God has always and will always know what is best for us. God can navigate through treacherous waters much more safely than we ever could; therefore, we need to allow Him to do so. Thinking we have it all together will only lead to our coming apart at the worst possible time. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!

THE NEW BIRTH

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, … “ - 1 Peter 1:3

    Peter writes to Jewish believers “scattered throughout” various provinces in his region of influence. It seems they don’t realize that there will be hardship that comes with the rebirth provided by their salvation. The new birth cleanses and provides a new point of perspective. Believers are given the tools to live a Godly life all the while enduring discrimination and ostracism. Today, this is more the case in other parts of the world just as it was in Bible times; however, the US seems to only have to deal with ridicule and reproach. Regardless, God’s great mercy reveals to us that our new birth provides hope for this life and the life after. Our spiritual resurrection from sin to new life in Christ is a miraculous event that is not to be taken lightly. It’s designed to be a transformation of the highest order. As a snake sheds its skin, so are we to shed our old life with its words, thoughts and actions and take on, as it were, the new suit of clothes salvation presents to us. Embrace the new birth you’ve been given and know that you are unconditionally loved by your Creator. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!

GOD WILL KEEP YOU SAFE

“Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.” – Proverbs 29:25

          The writer of Psalm 56 declares on verse 4 that their trust is in Almighty God; “What can mere mortals do to me?” The frank and honest answer to that question is ‘nothing’. If you happen to believe that everything that takes place in this universe is either caused or allowed by God then there is nothing that can happen to any of us without God’s intimate knowledge. To not be in control of all things would make God less than He says He is. That would be a contradiction that would invalidate Christianity as a belief system. But if you choose to believe all that God says He is according to scripture, then you will begin to understand over time that while bad things do happen to good people, those people have the unlimited resources of God to draw from. So do not fear what any man can do to you. Trust in the Lord for He is your Heavenly Father; He formed you in your mother’s womb and therefore, can be trusted to keep you safe. THE LIGHT OF OUR SALVATION

“… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

          Christianity isn’t a ‘religion’ that you tuck in your pocket for safe keeping. Based on its teachings, it’s the one true belief system that deals with the problem of sin. That solution is found in Jesus Christ, God’s Son. Our redemption from sin isn’t something we should hide in our hearts. We should wear it around our neck as a woman would a precious jewel pendant so everyone knows the hope that is within us.

          But what of those who receive the gift of grace and then place it on the shelf in their closet like the ugly tie they received from Aunt Tillie for Christmas? We mustn’t hide our light or allow it to dim. We represent the one hope this world has. To not warn people of the consequences of sin is like walking past a burning building where you know people are asleep. Wake them up! Shake them up! Embrace the truth you have found and let the light of your salvation shine brightly so all may see. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!
