“It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.” - Deuteronomy 13:4
Deuteronomy (which means ‘The Second Law’) is comprised of three speeches Moses gives to the people of Israel. Chapter 13 is part of his second speech where he talks to them about turning away from God. At this time the Israelites are camped across the Jordan River preparing to enter into the Promised Land of Canaan.
The same holds true for believers today. Temptations abound and the thought of straying from the Lord, while many times not intentional, is a real threat. We get caught up in the momentary exhilaration of the ‘thing’ and if not careful can get swept off our original course. We must surrender our will to God and obey Him alone. We must hold fast to the Lord as one would strap themselves to the mast of a schooner during a raging storm. If we do so, then though tossed about by the winds and waves of temptation, we will still be standing when the storm is over. There is no other way to avoid falling away from God. Keep His word tucked in your heart and obey His directives. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!
