HABAKKUK at a glance

PURPOSE: To show that God is still in control of the world despite the apparent triumph of evil.

AUTHOR: The prophet Habakkuk. *

DATE WRITTEN: Between 612 and 589 BC

THE SETTING: “Babylon was becoming the dominant world power and Judah would soon feel Babylon’s destructive force.”

THE BLUEPRINT

1) Habakkuk’s complaints (Habakkuk 1:1 - 2:20)

2) Habakkuk’s prayer (Habakkuk 3:1-19)

“When Habakkuk was troubled, he brought his concerns directly to God. After receiving God’s answers, he responded with a prayer of faith. Habakkuk’s example is one that should encourage us as we struggle to move from doubt to faith. We don’t have to be afraid to ask questions of God. The problem is not with God and his ways but with our limited understanding of him.” (TLASB - P.1922)

Up next are the Mega-Themes of this book. Until that time, walk with the King and be a blessing.

In his name & for his glory,

* Habakkuk was a prophet who likely lived at the same time as Zephaniah and Jeremiah. Historians estimate he likely “prophesied a short time before the Babylonian invasions of Judah, which began in 605 B.C. Habakkuk watched with horror as the people of Judah became more and more unrighteous, but he was even more horrified when God used an even more unrighteous nation (Babylon) to judge them through the exile. God’s answers to Habakkuk’s questions provided insight and encouragement for Habakkuk and the righteous remnant in Judah, and those words preserved in the book of Habakkuk continue to do the same for believers today.” (https://www.crosswalk.com/faith/bible-study/things-to-know-about-habakkuk-in-the-bible.html)
