OBADIAH: Mega-Themes

JUSTICE: The reason God was going to destroy Edom was due to their standing by as Babylon invaded Judah. It apparently was the last straw for God because of their ill will toward the southern kingdom of Israel. The Edomites harassed Judah relentlessly over the years, but this inaction by the Edomites became their undoing. Their treachery toward their relatives in Judah was well known and because of their disinterest in bringing aid to the Jews relatives in their time of need God used the prophet Obadiah to warn the Edomites of their future destruction.

As evidenced by previous scripture, judgment and fierce punishment shall come to anyone who brings harm to God’s people. Looking forward to the present day we can be confident that God shall bring about true, fair, and ethical justice against any enemy of God’s people.

PRIDE:  Due to their seemingly impenetrable mountain fortress, the Edomites were proud and self-confident. Because of their apparent invincibility, they took advantage of their neighbor by picking on them thru the years. God makes sure that anyone who defies the Lord and trusts in their own power, wealth, technology, or wisdom more than in God will be brought down. Any prideful individual or nation will be shocked to find out that no one is exempt from the justice of the Lord. Edom, due to their sins against Judah, was humbled by God and disappeared from the face of the earth, never to be seen or heard from again. Up next is the book of Jonah. Until then, walk with the King and be a blessing.
