“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.” (John 10:14-15)
The Reformation Study Bible refers to ‘knowing’ in these verses as “a personal understanding and a commitment of will”. In a scriptural sense, ‘knowing’ someone is referring to a very intimate relationship. If God knows me in an intimate sense, than He knows everything about me and is committed to performing His will in my life. An equal commitment is required of us.
A shepherd is ever watchful of his flock. They are his responsibility and he guards them with his life. Christ laid His life down for the sake of His flock so that they might be free of the bondage of sin and life eternally with Him.
Jesus is called the ‘good’ shepherd because there is nothing but good in Him. No falseness or evil intentions ever enter into His heart. He is pure and holy through and through. Like a good shepherd Christ is committed to us all and will never fail us. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!
