“Teach us to use wisely all
the time we have.” Psalm
90:12
No one knows how much time we have on this earth. Some pass away as infants, some before they
reach their teens. Still others live for a long, long time. We cannot know when our time is up. God alone knows. He ushers us into this life and ushers us out
just the same. As I ponder the years I
have spent on this earth, I wonder how much of it has been squandered on
worthless endeavors. I figure quite a
bit. The only one who can teach us how
to spend our time wisely is the creator of all time. Almighty God knows the beginning from the end
because He was there by His Spirit.
Time is defined as a “nonspatial*
continuum** in which events occur in apparently irreversible succession from
the past through the present to the future”. Now that’s a mouthful. Let’s put it this way: time is how we judge how long or short a
period is. It’s measured in seconds,
minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, etc. I believe we could all use some help learning
how to spend our time wisely. We are
flawed, unwise creatures. Fortunately
for us God knows that. We have a great
tendency to waste a lot of time, as well as resources that have been given to
us. The Lord wishes to train us in the
art of best utilizing the time we have at our disposal. Much of our time is spent working a job or
sleeping, which doesn’t leave us a whole lot of time to do anything else. Time with God typically ends up being pushed
back to the end of the list. We read
scripture sporadically and pray on the fly much of the time. We don’t realize that when we make time for
God in our daily lives we find peace. A
tranquil spirit eludes us when we don’t purposefully set aside some time to
listen to our Lord. We learn nothing new
when we are speaking. It is in listening
that we are able to tap into the vast resources that exist in God.
If you wish to spend more time sitting at the feet of God
learning what He wants us to know, then you simply need to stop … be still …
listen. God speaks to us out of the
stillness. Hearing and listening are two
completely different things. We can
listen to things all day and not truly hear a thing. We need to learn to listen to God with our
spiritual ears. May God teach us all to
fine tune our spiritual ears and use our time more wisely for the kingdom in
the coming year. Until next time, walk
with the King and be a blessing!
