Hebrews 12:1 New Living Translation
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.”
Our walk with the Lord is likened to a long distance race. Long distance runners work very hard to build up endurance and strength. It’s not just that they are in a race; if they are competitive at all they want to win the race. Now in Christendom we are all winners if we run the race to the end. It’s like the non-experienced runner participating in a marathon. Even though he doesn’t win it he did finish it and that makes him a success.
The “crowd of witnesses” is listed in the previous chapter. The crowd consists of the likes of Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, the parents of Moses and Moses himself. They have finished their race and are cheering us on because every temptation that confronts us has confronted them at one point in their lives. They know what a walk with God entails. It calls for continuous self-assessment to see if there is anything that comes in conflict with your relationship with God. Those things must be removed.
Is there something that is blurring your focus, something that is distracting you? Get rid of it with the help of the Holy Spirit. Do you find that you are lugging around a backpack full of bricks? Let it drop to the ground and continue on. As long as you are in the center of God’s will for your life, there is nothing you cannot do. Spend time with God. He desires your company. Until next time, walk with the one, true King and be a blessing!
