“Do what is good and run from evil so that you may live!”
- Amos 5:14a
The
roller coaster ride that was Israel with regards to their obedience to God was
at another low. While they considered themselves to be God’s people, they continued
to sin against him. Their obedience was verbal but their actions didn’t line up
with their words. God uses the prophet Amos to pronounce judgment upon the
Northern Kingdom of Israel due to their continued idolatrous practices &
their oppression of the poor among them.
This
message is for us today as well as the Jews from the Old Testament. We are to
run far from all evil & do that which is good in the sight of the Lord.
Scripture tells us that only God is good & that we fall woefully short of
his glory. We must allow the Holy Spirit to teach & train us to think, say
& do that, which is pleasing in God’s sight. Life is not about pleasing
self, but rather pleasing our Creator God. In pleasing him we shall know
security & prosperity. The truth of the matter is that knowing God in an
intimate way is life itself.
The
prophet Isaiah speaks on the same subject of doing good when he says, “Wash
yourselves and be clean! Get your sins out of my sight. Give up your evil ways.
Learn to do good. Seek justice.” This is how we must live as believers in
Christ. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!
