GOD'S WORD A LAMP

Psalm 119:105 (NKJV) “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Ever take a walk down a dark dirt road without the benefit of street lights? I have. It’s kinda spooky. You begin to imagine that every sound is something far worse than it actually is. A flashlight definitely comes in handy at a time like that. Well, God is telling us through David that the His word acts like a lamp for our feet and a light to show us where to go, just like a flashlight.

It is important for us to see where we are going, but I believe what this verse is really saying here is that the word of God provides the light of His commands and precepts for us to follow. Without His “guide book”, how on earth would we know about His character, His commands or His promises? His word shows us the way to go. It points us in the proper direction. Whether we walk that way is up to us … you know, free will and all that. But without commands and promises, boundaries so to speak, we would wander about aimlessly thinking we knew where we were going but never arriving at our destination.

When I used to go camping many years ago, I had a Coleman kerosene lamp. You would fill the canister on the bottom with kerosene, turn on the lamp and light a match to the mantels hanging in the globe. My how very bright that lamp would light up … it was bright enough to light the entire campsite. This is like God’s word as well. It shines light on all that is around you so that you feel safe. Evil lives in the darkness. It cannot abide in the light for it exposes it for what it truly is. Once we become more and more familiar with scripture, we are able to see things for what they really are. Do you remember when you first gave your heart to Christ? Wasn’t it like blinders were taken off your eyes and you felt like for the very first time you could truly see things? I felt like it was. Things that you never noticed before stood out before you as if they were lit up like neon. This is what God’s word and His Holy Spirit does for the believer, whether new or old.

God has a path for each of us to travel. He leads us by His Spirit and lights the way by His word. This is why it is important for us to be IN His word; to learn and understand His precepts and know how to act and react in various situations and circumstances. He will never fail us. His word is true and everlasting. His Spirit resides IN us if we are a believer. No matter where we are or what we are doing, we are always within the reach of God. He cares for us and will never allow us to fall if we put our trust in Him.

WALK WITH THE KING TODAY AND BE A BLESSING!
