“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34-35)
Man, in his infinite wisdom, has defined and redefined love to suit his latest whim for eons. Almighty God, the one true constant in existence, has defined love and it has stood the test of time. He showed us what it was through the death of His Son, Jesus Christ, rather than blather on with rhetoric that ends up being emotionless and thus meaningless.
We say we love lots of things. We love steak – we love the Yankees – we love our dog – we love our spouse. Our use of the word has so weakened its true meaning that it barely means anything anymore. Love is an action word. Our example died a gruesome death on a wooden cross reserved for criminals. If we truly love someone, saying it followed by actions will have a far greater impact.
Jesus tells his disciples that the world will know we represent Him if we love one another. This is not a suggestion, but rather a command. If we allow the Holy Spirit to make us a little more selfless each day loving the unlovely ones within the brethren won’t seem so difficult. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!
