“We must pay the most
careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift
away.” “…how shall we escape if we
ignore so great a salvation?” Hebrews 2:1, 3
How many people listen to the gospel
message yet never hear what’s being said? How many hear it and let it slip
away? God is patient and kind; slow to
anger, abounding in mercy (Psalm 145:8).
However, a payment is coming due on the last day and many who have not
paid careful attention to following the parameters within the message will come
up lacking on that day. That is not a
threat, but rather a warning. The great
and wonderful gift of salvation has been provided for all who have been
created. Even those who claim to be
born-again may not escape if they are not careful to pay close attention to how
they proceed through this life.
Drifting away from the faith is not
only possible, but also likely if one doesn’t take the time to cultivate their
relationship with the Lord. Any
relationship will falter and fade away if not tended to. Many an earthly marriage has gone the way of
divorce because one or both parties have lost interest in continuing the
cultivating process. Why do I use the
word cultivate? The word means, “to
promote the growth of”. Think of a garden. You till the soil, you plant the
seed, you water it, you fertilize it, you keep weeds from overtaking it and you
will have a healthy, vibrant plant/crop.
Why would it be any different with earthly or spiritual
relationships? It wouldn’t. That’s the
point. But people fail to see this and let their relationship with God become
one sided. God loves you with an unending, unconditional love. It shall never change no matter what you ever
do or don’t do. Yet we ignore the
significance of our salvation.
We cannot pay the debt we owe. We never could and never will be able
to. Do you understand how great a gift
you have been given? Now go live like it. Celebrate the relationship you have with the
Lord and start to promote growth in it once again. We all slack off from time to time, myself
included. God has given us a wonderful
opportunity to grow in His grace and mercy.
Seize that opportunity and flourish in the name of the Lord! Until next time, walk with the King and be a
blessing!
