“Let someone
else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips.” Proverbs 27:2
hu·mil·i·ty à
(h)yo͞oˈmilədē/ à noun
a modest or low view of one's own importance; humbleness.
Having
a humble spirit is a desirable trait that all believers should seek. I know a man who built a front stoop for a
friend and all the while he tooted his own horn as to how great a job he was
doing. My immediate reaction to that
sort of thing is “I’ll be the judge of
that.” No one likes a braggart. When someone brags about himself we have to
wonder why. Is it because no one else
ever has, thus making them insecure? Is
it because they are filled with an unhealthy dose of self-pride? Whatever the reason Jesus Christ was never
like that. We have been called to follow
the example Christ lived out for us as documented in the gospels. It doesn’t mean we have to wear linen
garments and sandals and follow his every action ‘religiously’. I feel like it more accurately means that we
are to take on His character traits, making them our own.
Proverbs 16:18 tells us “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty
(prideful) spirit before a fall.” Paul clearly teaches in Philippians 2:3
that we are to think of others welfare before our own. That is what true humility does. Places the needs of others before their own.
A while back I came up with a
phrase that I wholeheartedly believe in.
It goes like this: Become extraneous! To become extraneous means to become
irrelevant. My meaning is tied to John
3:30 which says “He must become greater, I must become less.” God is extremely relevant, we are not. We are not essential to life, God is.
Be humble in all you think say
and do and in so doing honor God. Until
next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!
