“My soul is
weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word.” Psalm 119:28
David is expressing his extreme
weariness from sorrow due to the many afflictions he has experienced. Some of his calamitous situations are due to
poor decisions on his part, some as a matter of course. He was the King of Israel and his leadership
was put to the test continuously. Some
scholars note that David may have been in a depression. He knew God intimately and therefore knew
that the word of God could strengthen him through the mere hearing of it
spoken. It’s no different with us
today.
Depression is a very real thing that
happens to a person who has lost hope.
Their circumstances have caused them to become so downcast that they
have, at least temporarily, lost the ability to pull themselves up. It can become an almost catatonic state if
allowed to be. It need not take us in
its’ grip. Christians have a
never-ending source of peace, contentment and hope at their disposal in God’s
word.
There are times when even the strongest believer will have
the inability to crack open his or her bible and read God’s life giving
words. We find ourselves in such a
malaise that we check out, unable to sort things out rationally. That’s when having a trusted brother or
sister in Christ can be invaluable.
Having someone else stand in the gap for us in prayer or for counsel can
lift us out of our funk and put us back on our feet again.
Remember, the Word of God is the lifeblood of the
believer. Read it, meditate on it and
know it, for it will keep you far from trouble and even in your darkest hour
will give you something to draw from for encouragement. Until next time, walk with the King and be a
blessing!
