“For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a
righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: ‘The
righteous will live by faith.’”1 Romans 1:17
Paul is writing to both Jew and Gentile as he speaks of the
righteousness of God that is revealed to the believer. He quotes the Old Testament, giving credence
to Jews being in the Roman church.
The statement the righteous will live by faith shines a light on the backbone of Christianity: faith. Scripture clearly tells us in Hebrews 11:6 that “without faith it is impossible to please God”. Faith believes in the unseen as if it can be seen. Since God cannot be seen, it requires faith to truly believe in His existence. We are considered righteous in the eyes of God when we repent and receive forgiveness for our sins. Therefore, all believers are righteous and should live by faith. Faith will lead us to trust. If we believe God exists then it behooves us to trust Him. Since it would make no sense to trust Him now and again or for some things and not others, we are to trust Him for all things or to provide for and sustain us. That is what a righteous man does. This is what is pleasing to the Lord, to trust Him in every situation. God will not fail us. We must live as if that which we hope for has already been realized. This is what faith is. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!
