“… I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord…” (Philippians 3:8a)
Paul has no real doctrinal issues to deal with in his letter to the Philippians so he expresses the joy he has for their strong faith in Christ. Here he expresses his own gratitude for knowing Christ by saying that everything else is worthless garbage to him by comparison. He is telling us in effect that we mustn’t allow anything to interfere with knowing Christ in the fullest. We need to have an intense longing to know Christ intimately and as a result, know Almighty God for they are one in the same. The righteousness we enjoy, our being made right with God, is part of the gift of salvation that He offers us. Knowing Christ is a far greater thing than all the riches this world could ever offer. The hope of winning lottery millions cannot compare to the contentment that comes from ‘the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus’ as both Lord and Savior of ones life.
As you go about your day, reflect on what Jesus Christ truly means to you. Giving Him your all each day and striving to be more like Him is what we are meant to do with our new lives in Christ.
