“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,” (Titus 2:11-12)
Titus was ministering on the isle of Crete, the 4th largest island in the Mediterranean. Cretans were said to be “liars, evil beasts and lazy gluttons” by some of their compatriots. (Titus 1:12b) For this reason Paul felt compelled to stress in his letter to Titus that followers of Christ must deny ungodliness and the lusts of this world.
It’s no different today. Man, in general, can be a brutish lot. They can be selfish, self-centered, judgmental and unforgiving with regularity. Even the most proper among us can resort to this type of behavior when they feel necessity demands it. This is all the more reason why we, as ambassadors of Christ, must seek to be more like our Lord. Reacting with what comes naturally to us may result in consequences we will regret. We’ll never be perfect this side of heaven, failing frequently; however, that is never a reason to cease trying. Live as righteous men, following the precepts laid out for us in scripture. Strive to be more Christ-like each day. Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!
