“Prophecy and speaking in
unknown languages and special knowledge will
become useless. But love will last forever!” – 1 Corinthians 13:8
In this
season of love, with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, it’s as good a
time as any to look at exactly what love is. There are many ways one could
define love, but I have never seen a definition as clean, concise and to the
point as the one in Paul’s first letter to the believers in Corinth. These 4
verses in chapter 13 encapsulate the very essence of what love truly is or at
least should be. Let’s take a look …
“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or
boastful or proud or rude. It does
not demand its own way. It is not
irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith,
is always hopeful, and endures through
every circumstance.”
Can you
imagine what kind of world we would live in if everyone adhered to this
seemingly simple, yet complex to perform definition of how to love one another?
Man is too bull headed, feeling the intense need to be autonomous, free from
any outside control. God knows what’s best for us, yet we strain at the leash,
looking for ways to break away from what we consider to be restraints. That’s
really too bad. Life could be so much simpler if we would just follow his lead.
It can be done. Listen for the still small voice of the Holy Spirit
within and learn to follow his directives, for they represent the heart of God.
Until next time, walk with the King and be a blessing!
